A Message from your Chamber

The Northwest Chamber (formally known as the Reisterstown-Owings Mills- Glyndon Chamber) has been serving Reisterstown and the surrounding communities since 1949. There have been a lot of changes in our area since our beginning. How well do you know your Reisterstown history?

Here are a few fun facts:

  1. It was founded in 1758 by a German immigrant, John Reister.
  2. In 1764, John Reister purchased a three-quarter acre lot which became the community’s first church as well as a school house. The town raised money with a public subscription and replaced the log building with a brick school building in 1824, named Franklin Academy. Franklin Academy became the first public high school in the county in 1874 and one of the earliest schools to join the Baltimore County school system.
  3. The former Franklin Academy was converted into a public library in the early 1900s. It still stands beside the Reisterstown Community Cemetery, across the street from the present-day Franklin Middle School. Franklin Academy’s cupola, known as the Franklin Bell, is in front of Franklin High School.

Another fact about Reisterstown is that the residents feel a special bond. This is evident if you run into people who have been in the town for decades- their sentence will start with “Do you remember when…” ?

One fun tradition is the Reisterstown Festival. For the 32nd time, Reisterstown will host a two-day festival starting with a parade on September 8th. There will be crafts and goods to buy, local businesses and associations, food, drinks, kid areas, live music and more.

We hope that you will make it out to Hannah More Park this coming weekend to enjoy the festivities. We will be there! Come on by and pick up your flyer about all of our upcoming events.
