A New Year & Retirement Message From Your Chamber President
The Holidays have past and the New Year is upon us! I want to personally wish each and everyone a happy, healthy holiday season and a new year filled with many reasons to celebration.
When I reflect on the year that has almost passed, I remember with love those we have lost and I rejoice in welcoming the new lives that have come into our community.
As a Chamber we have so much to celebrate! Our membership keeps growing and our events sell out. Our merchant community continues to flourish as one project after another revitalizes the Northwest Corridor. We can be proud of the relationships we have fostered between businesses at our networking events and between our merchants and the communities they serve at our Crab Feast and Taste of the Town. Let us continue in 2020 to become an even more cohesive, supportive and positive force for the Northwest Community.
It has been an honor to serve as your President. I have gotten to know many of you well and formed friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for your support and friendship. While I plan to remain an engaged and supportive member of the Northwest Chamber, I am look forward to retiring as of January 1st.
The role of President and CEO will be fulfilled by Emily Winters
For those of you who don’t know Emily, you will soon have a chance to meet her as she travels the community or at our Annual Breakfast on January 29th. Emily Winters is a bright and experienced professional with a contagious enthusiasm for the Northwest Community. In her role as Community Business Development Manager for Barnes & Noble, she successfully accomplished many of the same goals we have for our Chamber. I am confident Emily will be a wonderful addition to our community as well as an innovative leader. I know all of you will extend a warm Northwest Chamber welcome to her.

One at-Large Baltimore County School Board Seat
TOWSON, MD — The Baltimore County School Board Nominating Commission will be accepting applications beginning Thursday, January 2, 2020, for the Board’s vacant at-large seat. The individual selected for this seat will fill the remaining vacated term, which ends December 2022.
Following the 2014 and 2017 Maryland General Assembly sessions, the composition and selection of the Board of Education of Baltimore County changed. Beginning in 2018, the Board became a hybrid Board by including both appointed and elected members. Seven members of the school board are elected, while four members of the Board are appointed by the governor. The Baltimore County School Board Nominating Commission has the task of selecting nominees to recommend to the governor for the four at-large positions.
“Now, our task is to select two nominees to recommend to the governor for appointment for the one at-large seat,” said Commission Chairman Aaron Plymouth. “All interested Baltimore County residents are urged to submit applications.”
Candidate interviews are scheduled for:
- Tuesday, February 18, 2020 – 6 to 9:30 p.m.
- Monday, February 24, 2020 – 6 to 9:30 p.m.
The application will be posted on the Baltimore County Public Schools’ website as of Thursday, January 2, 2020. Applications will be accepted through Friday, January 31, 2020.

Four New Business Are Coming To The Reisterstown Shopping Center
With new tenants announced for the Reisterstown Shopping Center and Pikesville Shopping Center, the Reisterstown Road commercial corridor is poised for growth and improvement, and I could not be more excited about the 2nd District’s future prospects.
A representative from Greenberg Gibbons, which owns the Reisterstown Shopping Center, shared at Reisterstown Improvement Association Business Roundtable meeting Tuesday that Starbucks, Mattress Warehouse, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Chipotle Mexican Grill have signed leases to fill the vacancy of the former Burger King site.
In addition, the representative shared that a prospective tenant is in negotiations to fill another vacancy and that the tenant has signed a letter of intent. Also, there is an separate lease being negotiated for a future development in the shopping center.
Recently, several constituents reached out to our office to share concerns about lighting in the parking lot, particularly during the evening hours. During my travels throughout the 2nd District this week, I was pleased to see that new lights had been installed on a number of light towers in the central part of the parking lot after our office informed the property manager.
Reisterstown Shopping Center has been a staple of the Reisterstown Road corridor for many years. Built in the 1960s, it is located directly across from Franklin High School.
Governments do not pick tenants for shopping centers, and I am sure everyone has a “wish list” for what they want to see at the Reisterstown Shopping Center But based on my conversations with residents, they are happy to see these vacancies are being filled and for both shopping centers to be beautified and enhanced.
All of these additions will provide a big boost to the Reisterstown Road corridor at a time when investment in our commercial districts is critical to growing our local economy.
